This summer you need… a long waistcoat.

Long waistcoat season.

We might be coming to the end of a heatwave this week, but knowing our good old Brit summer, the warm spell is not likely to last, so it’s time to start thinking about transitional pieces which work well in your wardrobe whatever the weather. This season I’m loving the long waistcoat micro trend which is bubbling about in stores. You know the ones, those linen and lightweight beauties that you can just sling over your shoulders for an extra layer if the weather turns or if you happen to work in an air-con office. They are uber chic, come in a plethora of fabrics and give you a flattering silhouette to boot – and what’s not to love about that.

I snapped up this long waistcoat in Massimo Dutti and was immediately hurled back in time to the 90’s when I used to wear the look quite often to work. I’d forgotten what a versatile styling tool it is and also how a waistcoat or sleeveless coat is easy to integrate into your closet. You can wear it with anything from trousers or shorts through to pencil skirts, dresses and jumpsuits and if you nab one which has a hemline finishing on the slimmest part of your calf (just below the knee or just above the ankle) you can be sure that it elongates your look – so perfect for us shorties.

I’ve paired my Massimo Dutti long waistcoat here with my summer uniform of white denim skinny jeans, slogan tee by Ganni, Gucci Princetown shoes and Prada cross body purse. I’m also using that old body elongating trick again of wearing one solid colour underneath the long waistcoat to fool the eye into thinking I’m a tad taller than I really am – love that trick!
