top 5 tips for street style photo posing

Unaccustomed as I am to getting papped by professional photographers, when Getty Images asked if they could do an interview with me which included a street style piccie, I jumped at the chance thinking it would be a breeze. What I failed to consider was that actually, there are a few golden rules to stick to when on the other side of the lens. So here are my top 5 tips for street style photo posing … if only I’d paid attention to them….

1. Smile

Yes, the good old street style shot is supposed to be one of those candid oops-you-caught-me-on-the-street-wearing-my-best-bib-and-tucker shots, but there is still ample opportunity to crack a smile. To be fair I think I was just about to crack a smile a nano-second later, but in hindsight I think I was busy concentrating on trying to hold my stomach in at this point. See the image above, and the rest of the interview here.

2. Don’t cross your legs in that over-worked fashion blogger pose – in this instance it makes me look like I’ve stuffed a pair of socks down my J.Crew broken-in boyfriend jeans. And definitely don’t hunch your shoulders.

3. Remember what you are wearing, as the point of the whole thing is to let readers in on which on-trend items your stylish self has chosen to swank around in that particular day.

For the record after much post-photo opp label scrutiny I was wearing Masc Studio sleeveless coat which is available to order through their atelier service. Cos leather trim shirt from a while back. The jeans are  J.Crew broken-in boyfriend jeans and Tabitha Simmons heels which are sold out, but you can bag other delicious statement silk heels here from Oscar de la Renta or some cute fabric ones from J.Crew here. The bag is Sophie Hulme and the bracelets Hipanema.

4. Wear plenty of accessories so the photographer can get their obligatory close-up detail shot – of course having too much stuff on slightly detracts from the slick ‘I’m actually a stylist in my day job’ notion.

5. Enjoy it – it’s not every day you get to hang out with a top class photographer like Kirstin Sinclair,  and then mooch about bus stops outside Selfridges with Alexa Chung, Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe, whilst Kirstin dashes about getting awesome shots of them. Take a peek here at the street style shots I managed to snag of those lovely ladies.

A huge thanks for the fab article put together by the lovely Getty Images folk… I promise to read my notes above and bring my smile next time.

And an equally huge thanks to Kirstin Sinclair who did her best with a bad model. We are set to hook up next fash week for a ‘day in the life of’ post on her – watch this space.
